Ambleside Parish Church of St Mary The Virgin

St. Mary's ChurchOur inspiring Gilbert Scott building houses a lively Christian family of all ages. Each week we welcome many visitors from this country and abroad. Do come and worship with us.

'In addition to our regular services where we worship God and learn together about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ two special events take place each year:

On the first Saturday in July we hold the Rushbearing Ceremony. This dates back to the nineteenth century when the old rushes used to keep the floor of the church warm during the winter were thrown out and new ones brought in. A very colourful procession, with people carrying ‘Bearings’, is led by a band around the streets of Ambleside. This is followed by a short service in church, a slice of gingerbread each and sports for the children which includes a fell race. Feel free to join us. (A mural, painted during the war depicting the Rushbearing, can be seen on the wall at the back of the church.)

On Christmas Eve the church is packed to the rafters as people come from far and wide to our famous Christingle service – a wonderful start to Christmas.
